MATERIALS LIST

MATERIALS OPTIONS/BRANDS
This is by no means an exhaustive list but these are some of the items most
commonly found in local art shops which I have found to be very good.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST
I have put together a list below of materials which you will need for the majority of classes.  Don’t worry too much if you don’t have something as I have plenty of materials you can use during the class if you don’t have a particular pen etc.

  • Watercolour Paper (essential for Zoom classes) - Cold Press only, 100% cotton, 300gsm
  • If going on location you will need Sketchbook x 2, size A5 or larger, any format is fine (one good quality minimum 220 gsm paper suitable for watercolour - ideally buy cotton as it is so much easier to use, albeit more expensive) the other sketchbook can be more for practicing - see below for recommendations
  • Watercolour Travel Kit - a small metal palette is ideal - not Cotman please.  I have put together some kits which you can find online with www.larrypost.com.au
  • lwww.larrypost.com.au/judy-salleh-beginner-sketch-kit.html
  • Small portable water container (a small empty plastic jar is great)
  • Paint brushes such as size 8  (and a 10 or 12 – optional)
  • Black permanent ink pen (see list of suitable pens below)
  • HB and 2B pencil
  • Kneadable putty eraser (or soft eraser)
  • Pencil sharpener
  • White fine Posca Pen (alternatively a Uniball Signo White Gel Pen) or White Gouache Paint (in a small tube) - you will need to have a small plastic lid or container in which to squeeze this
  • Tissues

THE FOLLOWING ARE OPTIONAL :
  • Black Brushpen
  • Watercolour graphite pencil 6B or 8B
  • Chinagraph

I HAVE PROVIDED BELOW A LIST OF SOME SUITABLE OPTIONS IN EACH CATEGORY:

PENS such as:
Fountain Pen with waterproof ink (De Atramentis Document Ink is my recommended ink as it will not clog your pen)
Sharpie pen
Uni-ball Air
Faber Castell
Pitt Artist Pen
Micron Pen

SKETCHBOOKS such as:
(PLEASE DO NOT BUY MONTMARTRE!)

Winsor and Newton – 300gsm cotton - my favourite
Handbook (by Global) - (not cotton but very nice however)

Seawhite of Brighton Plein Air Sketchbook 350gsm (not cotton but takes watercolour ok - does dry a bit too fast outdoors)
Stillman and Birn Beta (not cotton but very nice however)
Moleskine Watercolour (not cotton - a lot of people like this but I think it's only OK, not great for lots of layers of watercolour)

Strathmore Mixed Media (not cotton and not bad for layers of watercolour)

WATERCOLOUR PAPER
Please purchase only 100% cotton, cold press paper, medium, 300gsm which you can buy in sheets from Art Shops (which is by far the most economical and then cut or tear them up) or Pads or Blocks is more convenient but more expensive
Suggestions:
Saunders Waterford 100% cotton, cold press paper, medium
Arches 100% cotton, cold press paper, medium
Raines 100% cotton, cold press paper, medium

BRUSH PENS
Pentel Brush Pens
Pitt Artist

WATERCOLOUR TRAVEL BRUSHES
I Highly recommend if you can afford it to buy a pure sable watercolour brush but there are many many options out there.  Some of my preferred are;

Escoda Kolinsky Travel Brushes
Rosemary and Co Travel Brushes
Da Vinci Travel brushes
Any Kolinsky Sable brush

BRUSHES
Please find below a couple of suggestions for general brushes (pointed round shape) suitable for classes and travel sketching, both of which are available from LarryPost in Brookvale or order from them online:

Escoda Perla Size 10
White Nights Series 1113 size 5 or size 6 - a beautiful sable brush
Rosemary & Co RR10 Nylon Brush
Or a Robert Wade Neef 970 taklon brush - great for detail and for mixing - Size 6 and 8 are good - I love this brush and use it all the time for detail
In addition for watercolour classes you will often need a mop brush such as:

Rosemary and Co R9 (travel mop)
Neef Alvaro Castagnet 117 Squirrel mop Size 000 or a 0

You can also use a Goat's Hair Hake Brush for larger washes such as:

Neef Goat Hair Hake size 30mm

If you are working on larger paper please seek larger brushes of similar specifications

WATERCOLOURS
This can be a bit of a minefield if you don't know what to get.  Please give me a call to discuss first if you have any queries as the names of colours can be confusing and the same colour may have a different name depending on the brand.  I am more than happy to help.

You will need a 12 colour Watercolour Palette (the ones listed below are mainly Daniel Smith Paints) if you are going to make up your own palette.  If you wish to buy a good quality but very reasonable travel palette that is already set up with suitable colours then please purchase the White Nights palette at LarryPost -  they are a small shop based in Freshwater and this can be ordered online  I have my own palette listed on their website:  http://www.larrypost.com.au  and then type in the search box "Judy Salleh Palette"
Below is the list of colours if you wish to make your own palette.  These colours can be substituted for any brand, but ideally Artist Quality, as it makes a big difference.  These are my own personal preferences listed below:

JUDY SALLEH PALETTE UPDATED JANUARY 2022

If you wish to purchase a limited palette which is great when starting please choose the following 12 colours by Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton OR any other Artist Quality Watercolours:

12 COLOURS

Quinacridone Gold, ( or New Gamboge) (a warm Yellow)

Permanent Alizarin Crimson
Quinacridone Rose

If you wish to expand your choices here is a suggested 18 colour choice:

20 COLOURS

Below is the very comprehensive palette I often use which includes some colours of personal choice but are not essential.  I have chosen them with help from Jane Blundell who is a watercolour expert in terms of colours.  The Colours are a mixture of Daniel Smith and Windsor and Newton Professional Artist Watercolours:

Hansa Yellow Medium
Quinacridone Gold
Raw Sienna
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna  (Winsor and Newton only not Daniel Smith)
Burnt Umber
Goethite
Buff Titanium
Cadmium Orange
Pyrrol Scarlet or any bright red
Permanent Alizarin Crimson
Quinacridone Rose
Quinacridone Purple
Lavender
Indanthrene Blue

Lunar Black

If you have or buy the Cotman Pocket Plus Set (Student Quality) it will contain the following colours:
Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue
Cadmium Yellow Hue
Cadmium Red Pale Hue
Alizarin Crimson Hue
Ultramarine
Cobalt Blue Hue
Sap Green
Viridian Hue
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
Chinese White (I recommend replacing the white with a lemon yellow colour)

If you are looking to purchase watercolours I would highly recommend that you purchase “Artists Quality” Watercolours if you can afford them as the additional cost is a reflection of the quality of the pigments used.  They tend to be richer in colour and easier to wet and work with.  However if you are starting out on your watercolour journey it is a considerable amount of money to invest so the Cotmans colours are a perfect starting point.  If you wish further advice please just ask me.

I ALWAYS SAY "YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY ART MATERIALS!"
